MATTHEW TAPSON COLOURIST

Soon Comes Night is an action packed rollercoaster telling the story of a liberation hero turned heist gangster and the detective tasked with tracking down him and his gang.

The 6 part series was produced for Netflix and I was tasked with the grading and finishing of the film. Once again, I was involved from early on with developing a set of look LUTs that could be selected for on set monitoring and applying to dailies. Having a collaborative relationship with a DP with a strong vision is a huge advantage in the grading process and Brad Devine had a clear idea from the outset of how the series should look. We were strongly influenced by David Fincher's Mindhunter, Christopher Nolan's Tenet and The Joker.

We once again used ACES for colour management and leaned into some of the best aspects of film emulation, including the tonal curve of print film stock, while also making the most of film-like subtractive saturation to generate the look of the show. Parts of the storyline were set during the liberation struggle taking place in the 80s and so a look that helped define this era was an important element of the grade, with the present-day storyline getting a cleaner and more modern feel. The large number of VFX and CGI shots were integrated seamlessly in the grading suite, having been executed with great skill by Shaun Hillary.

Once again, having an outstanding post production team, helmed by Cremer Van'Dango, meant that the process of finishing Soon Comes Night went off without any issues, delays or hiccups.
